HOPE VALLEY COLLEGE IS GOING GREEN!

Hope Valley College catering department is committed to minimising its carbon footprint. Over a year has passed since the decision to stop the sale of all plastic bottles. Almost unbelievably during the school year of ’16-’17 we sold 32,977 plastic bottles. Happily, this figure has now been reduced to 0. Our students now bring in their own reusable bottles for water or purchase school-compliant sparkling fruit cans which they recycle in our on-site facilities.

2019 sees us go one step further by introducing biodegradable PLA packaging for our food items.

What is PLA?

* PLA (Polylactic acid), a plastic substitute made from fermented plant starch (usually corn).

* Around the world, PLA is poised to play a big role as a viable, biodegradable replacement.

* In catering, PLA products are becoming popular as they are capable of biodegrading at a much faster rate than plastic while still offering the same level of sanitation and utility.
