Hope Valley College Library is a learning resource centre containing a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, computers for research and a range of magazines and journals. It is staffed by a full-time librarian.
The Library is open to students from 9am to 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 3:30pm on Friday. Teachers may book the library for classes, individual or group research and for reading lessons using Accelerated Reader. This is a reading scheme for all students in Years 7 and 8 which encourages them to select appropriate but challenging fiction that will build their vocabulary and reading skills.
Outside lesson times, students are welcome to use the library socially, to select or exchange books, to have a quiet read or to play selected games. The exception to this is one silent day in each week when students are expected to read or work in silence during their breaks.
HVC library runs a number of book review clubs including those shown below. Everyone in the local community is welcome to join our Library and we stock a range of senior fiction for loan, as well as a good selection of local studies information.
- The Carnegie Shadowing Group is open each summer to enthusiastic readers at HVC. Readers ‘shadow’ the judging process for the CILIP Carnegie Medal for outstanding literature for young people, and have their own vote for their chosen winner
- HVC Community Book Club meets in the Library, generally at 6.15pm on the third Monday of the month, to discuss a chosen book supplied by Bakewell Library. Copies may be collected at meetings or from a box in HVC Reception. Alternatively, members who prefer to use an e-reader may download their own copy of each month’s title
- Bookeroo! is a book club for Year 5 and 6 children from local primary schools and Year 7 students at HVC. We choose a new book each month and meet in the library, usually on the third Monday, to eat biscuits, discuss the story, and take part in activities based on it. Sessions start at 3.45pm and last for an hour
The library is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment thanks to the generosity of the College PTFA. As a result the library will be closed over the summer 2018, but will have a grand re-opening early in the autumn term which will be publicised widely. Library news is posted regularly on the Library Blog here on the College website or at https://hvclibrary.wordpress.com/.The blog has a link to the library’s twitter feed (https://twitter.com/HVCLRC) which you are encouraged to follow.
